If you want to make a million from investing in UK shares, you need a plan. Then you need to stick to it, throughout your working life. If you dedicate yourself to the task of building your wealth, you may be surprised how far you get.The stock market crash makes now a good time to get started, as many top FTSE 100 shares are trading at bargain prices. Although the truth is, if you want to make a million, you have to invest through thick and thin. Whenever you have the money, basically. Here’s how I’d aim to get there.5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…1. Start investing regularly nowThe earlier you start, the better. It is possible to make a million by investing as little as £100 a week, if you are young. If you start at age 25 and make an average total return of 6.5% a year after charges, you’d have £1.04m by age 66.Even if you start at a later age, it can be done. Cut back on frivolous spending where possible, and invest all you can. If you take out a personal pension, you can get tax relief on your contributions, boosting their value. In a Stocks and Shares ISA, all your returns are free of income tax and capital growth for life. Even if you make a million. If you don’t have £100 a week to spare now, start with a smaller regular sum and look to increase it over time. Another advantage of investing regularly is that you do not have to worry about timing the market, or whether shares are up or down. In fact, you benefit when shares fall, as your monthly payment picks up more stock.2. Reinvest all your dividendsAfter you have chosen your stock or fund, check the settings on your online wealth platform to ensure all your dividends are automatically reinvested. In the long run, dividends make up a huge chunk of your ultimate returns. Those regular payments may not seem much on their own, but are a key part of your bid to make a million.Over the 20 years to 31 December 2019, the FTSE 100 rose by just over 600 points to 7,542, a rise of just 8.8%. If you had reinvested all your dividends, your total return would have been 122%, according to Schroders. You can draw your dividends after you retire, to top up your pension.3. Add lump sums to make a millionAs well as investing regular monthly sums, you should turbocharge your ‘make a million’ plans by paying in one-off lump-sums whenever you have cash to spare. Whether this is a work bonus, inheritance or other windfall, you should put it to work as soon as you can. Otherwise you risk frittering it away. You will not make a million on the stock market overnight. This is the work of a lifetime. The sooner you start planning, the better your chances of making it.center_img I would like to receive emails from you about product information and offers from The Fool and its business partners. Our 6 ‘Best Buys Now’ Sharescenter_img The Marks & Spencer (LSE: MKS) share price is up by 5% as I write, even though the high street retailer reported a half-year loss of £72m this morning.I’m not surprised. Today’s half-year results are better than expected. I think the chances that CEO Steve Rowe will pull off this difficult turnaround are improving. I’ve stayed on the sidelines so far, but I think M&S shares could be worth a closer look.5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…Tasty results from foodAlthough sales for the whole group fell by 15.8% to £4,091m during the first half of the year, this was to be expected. The first lockdown kept the firm’s clothing and home stores closed for months. Although online sales rose by 34%, this wasn’t enough to make up for lost store sales. The good news is that the food business still seems to be doing well. During the six months to 26 September, M&S generated food sales of £2,838.6m, almost unchanged from the same period last year. That’s a decent result in my view, given that many of its food outlets are in travel and hospitality locations where sales have slumped this year. The food business is profitable, too, with a half-year operating profit of £109.7m. That’s 19% more than the same period last year and gives an operating margin of 3.9% — almost level with sector leader Tesco, at 4.2%. I’m impressed. I think the strong showing from food is probably why Marks & Spencer’s share price is rising today.Interestingly, around one-third of food profits came from the group’s new joint venture with Ocado. Management say that sales through Ocado Retail contributed £38.8m of profits during the half year. I’m optimistic about this new venture.Cash keeps flowingM&S has historically generated strong free cash flow. That still seems to be true. Free cash flow for the half year recovered from £23.3m to £77.6m this year, despite the impact of Covid-19.I was also pleased to see that the group’s net debt has fallen. Excluding lease liabilities, net debt fell from £1.61bn to £1.4bn during the first half of the year. That’s a solid reduction when the company is still investing in its turnaround.Achieving such a strong result during this year gives me confidence that Marks & Spencer is unlikely to face a cash shortage for the foreseeable future.Marks & Spencer share price: My viewMarks & Spencer’s clothing and home division is the oldest part of the business and the most problematic. Efforts to improve the performance of this business have been accelerated this year, according to CEO Steve Rowe.Looking ahead, Rowe plans a much greater focus on online sales and quicker stock turnover. Stores in retail parks — which have performed better this year — will also remain a priority.I don’t know how easy Rowe will find it to turn around the group’s clothing operation. But with Marks & Spencer’s share price still trading below 100p, I think the food business alone is almost enough to justify the current valuation. For this reason, I’ve added the stock to my portfolio watch list as a potential turnaround buy. Don’t miss our special stock presentation. It contains details of a UK-listed company our Motley Fool UK analysts are extremely enthusiastic about. They think it’s offering an incredible opportunity to grow your wealth over the long term – at its current price – regardless of what happens in the wider market. That’s why they’re referring to it as the FTSE’s ‘double agent’.Because they believe it’s working both with the market… And against it.To find out why we think you should add it to your portfolio today… Simply click below to discover how you can take advantage of this. Ramasubramaniun issued notice in the plea which challenged the provisions in context of the Constitutional tenets of Articles 14, 15 & 21 of the Constitution. When the case came up for hearing, CJI SA Bobde asked the counsel for petitioner, “What if children elope to get married and parents need to be told their whereabouts? What if a spouse runs away? How will the other spouse know where they are?”.To this, Advocate Kaleeswaram Raj responded: “The issue circumscribes solely on whether the publication of information of couples can be done. Inquiry by an officer is not the issue.”The petitioner has contended that the provisions allow anyone to submit objections to a marriage and empower the marriage officer to inquire into such objections and that these provisions violate the fundamental rights of couple intending to marry, depriving of their right to privacy under Article 21 of the Constitution.”The requirement of notice before marriage is absent in the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and customary laws in Islam. Therefore, the said provision is also discriminatory and violative of Article 14 of the Constitution” – Excerpt of PleaThe petitioner, Nandini Praveen, a law student had challenged Sections 6(2), 7, 8, & 10 as well as section 6(3) to the extent to which it says that “Marriage officers shall thereupon cause a copy thereof to be affixed to some conspicuous place in his officer” and section 9 to the extent of dealing with the inquiry. In this regard, the plea reads,”It is averred that as per Section 6(3), publishing details of notice of marriage by the marriage officers include the details of the parties like names, date of birth, age, occupation, parents’ names and details, address, pin code, identity information, phone number etc. This is a peculiar requirement of the SMA. Clauses (2) and (3) of section 6 to the extent to which those direct to cause affixation of notice in some conspicuous place in the office of Marriage Officer are violative of the right to privacy of the parties to the marriage. Section 7 to 8 and 10 of the SMA and section 9 to the extent to which it deals with inquiry under section 8 of the Act are also violative of the right to privacy of the parties to the marriage and are liable to be struck down”While delving into the KS Puttaswamy judgment, the petitioner states that the case has dealt with informational privacy specifically in matters of individual autonomy and right to privacy.”There is no reason by the information provided under Section 6 of the SMA would not be entitled to the protection of informational privacy,” the plea states.Further to this, the plea highlights the alleged discrimination between marriage as stipulated in the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, for marriages under Islam and under SMA.”Subjecting the couples marrying under the SMA to a requirement of causing publication of their details and not subjecting the couples marrying under the HMA & Islamic Law violates the right to equality under Article 14 & 15 of the Constitution,” states Praveen in her plea.Apropos this, the law-student petitioner has sought striking down the aforementioned provisions of the SMA as unjust, illegal and unconstitutional.Click Here To Download PetitionClick Here To Download Order[Read Order]Next Storylast_img read more

Tariq Ramadan loses bid for early release

first_imgOxford University professor Tariq Ramadan – who has been in custody in France since early February – has lost a bid for early release ahead of his trial, according to his lawyers. Ramadan’s lawyer, Emmanel Marsigny, called the decision “incredible” and told the AFP: “We were informed of the decision today and I immediately lodged an appeal.”Ramadan was also denied bail on health grounds last month, despite a bid by his lawyers claiming that the 55-year-old’s health had deteriorated since being brought into custody, and that his condition was “not compatible” with imprisonment. French authorities have judged him a flight risk.A medical report ordered by the French court in February confirmed that Ramadan suffers from multiple sclerosis. However, it concluded that Ramadan’s state of health was compatible with his continued detention, provided he received adequate medical treatment behind bars. Ramadan is currently detained in Fleury-Mérogis prison in Essonne on multiple accusations of rape. He has been on leave from the University, where he is a professor Islamic studies, since allegations surfaced in November. Ramadan has denied all allegations against him.At the same time that news of his health condition emerged, a video was released in which Ramadan’s wife, Iman Ramadan, claimed that her husband “had full confidence in justice and unfortunately [had] justice wronged him.”She said: “I’m not sure right now that he’s receiving a fair and just treatment.”last_img read more
