The location house, which has a striking exterior that broadly protrudes, stands on a small hill. This house, which means “hill” in Turkish, is built next to the house of the residents’ parents and has become a symbolic building for the neighborhood. The parking lot and approach-stairs are located at the front side of the site and provide access to the hill-top entrance. Since most of the site is sloped, the protrusion of the house characteristically floats via steel frames while a flat surface supports its groundwork. Cross-sectional ingenuities are employed in many places, such as in the creation of a storage space under the floor by utilizing the depth of the groundwork that is used to help support the counterweight of the cantilever.Save this picture!© Masao NishikawaSunlight showers the open-ceiling entrance hall. The living and dining rooms are designed with a slab floor continuation from the entrance, and they have a superb view that skillfully incorporates the neighbor’s well-kept yard as a borrowed landscape. The gentle steps from the living room to the dining room create a stage-like atmosphere in the space, and the skylight emphasizes dramatic shadings. The balcony protrudes to make full use of the site, but it also creates a sense of depth that is unique to the semi-enclosed space. Furthermore, it has a role of blocking the view from the road.Save this picture!© Masao NishikawaIn contrast to the open first floor, a common courtyard is made for the main bedroom and children’s room on the second floor, and garden views and sky views can be enjoyed in privacy. The floor level window from the children’s room has a view that extends all the way to the scenery at the bottom of the hill. By cross-sectional manipulation of elevation levels, the biggest characteristic of this house is that one can enjoy the depth and rhythm in many places within the house.Save this picture!SectionProject gallerySee allShow lessTanatorio Sant Joan Despí / Batlle i Roig ArquitectesSelected ProjectsVideo: IKEA Foundation Design a Shelter for RefugeesVideos Share Architects: APOLLO Architects & Associates Area Area of this architecture projectlast_img read more

Masum, a journalist employed by the English-language daily The New Age, who was arrested and tortured by an elite crime and counter-terrorist force, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), on 22 October in Dhaka.Masum told Reporters Without Borders from his hospital bed that he thinks he will take months to recover from his injuries.“It is encouraging that the authorities have responded to this incident by creating a commission of enquiry,” Reporters Without Borders said. “The torturers must be punished and Masum must be compensated. But more importantly, the government must give the security forces, including the RAB, clear instructions to put a stop to arbitrary arrests and mistreatment of journalists and human rights activists.”Members of a RAB unit identified as RAB-10 entered Masum’s home on 22 October and tortured him while others pretended to discover drugs there. They then took him to their headquarters in Dhalpur and held him for about 10 hours, torturing him and threatening to kill him with the aim of extracting a confession.Masum said the police officers vented on him the rage they felt towards The New Age’s editor, Nurul Kabir. The newspaper has carried articles linking the RAB to extrajudicial executions and drug cases. Masum was finally freed after The New Age interceded on his behalf. The RAB issued a statement on 24 October expressing regret about incident. The RAB director general told The Daily Star that a commission had been set up to investigate and take measures against those responsible for mistreating Masum. Other arrests have marred the record of the new civilian government as it completes its first year in office. Hasibur Rahman Bilu, The Daily Star’s correspondent in the northern city of Bogra, was held for several hours on trumped-up charges on 19 October.Bilu told Reporters Without Borders he was in Malaysia when, according to complaints brought against him, he allegedly tried to extract money from individuals on false pretences. He added that a former official was involved in this act of harassment.Bangladesh rose more than 10 places in the latest Reporters Without Borders press freedom index but it is still in the bottom third (121st out of 175 countries). Briton has second vCJD case found in US

first_img A CDC spokesman, David Daigle, told the AP there is no connection between the man’s diagnosis and the finding of BSE in a Texas cow earlier this year. That cow died in April on a Texas farm and never entered the human food or animal feed supply. The AP reported that 185 people from 11 countries have been diagnosed with vCJD since 1996. Of those cases, 158 were in Great Britain, 15 in France, 3 in Ireland, and now 2 in the United States. Countries reporting one case are Canada, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, and Spain. Born in the United Kingdom, the man lived there from 1980 until 1996, a period when residents were at risk for exposure to BSE-infected beef products, the AP reported. Although the AP story said the Scottish medical authorities have confirmed the diagnosis, it wasn’t clear how. A conclusive diagnosis of vCJD is ordinarily made only on autopsy. The United Kingdom’s National Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Surveillance Unit in Edinburgh, Scotland, has told the CDC that the case must be reported as a US case. The man wasn’t admitted to a Houston hospital while he lived there. He didn’t have any invasive medical procedures or receive donated blood, other possible routes of transmission for vCJD. He returned to Britain earlier this year, where he remains under medical care. “He lived in the United Kingdom for the whole time they had a problem,” said Lawrence B. Schonberger, a CDC epidemiologist, as quoted by the AP. “Almost certainly, this case represents a continuation of the outbreak that is going on in the United Kingdom, and it is just by convention that he happened to have gotten sick here.” “It re-emphasizes the need for us to be strong in terms of controlling this mad cow disease from all over the world,” Schonberger said in the AP story. “People need to take it seriously. It’s a bad disease.”center_img His sojourn in the United States was called “too brief relative to what is known about the incubation period for variant CJD,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta said. The disease can incubate for years. The first American case of vCJD also occurred in a young adult from Great Britain, a woman named Charlene Singh, 25, who was living in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She died in June 2004. The patient is a 30-year-old man who has lived in Houston for the past 4 years, according to an Associated Press (AP) report yesterday. The brain-wasting disease is believed to be caused by eating meat products from cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. New Safe Harbor Law Will Protect Child Victims of Human Trafficking

first_img October 25, 2018 New Safe Harbor Law Will Protect Child Victims of Human Trafficking Bill Signing,  Criminal Justice Reform,  Human Services,  Press Release,  Public Safety HARRISBURG – Governor Tom Wolf created new protections and supports for children of human trafficking and sexual exploitation by signing Senate Bill 554, now Act 130 of 2018. The new law shields children from prosecution for crimes their abusers forced them to commit, enhances law enforcement training and establishes a new fund for victim services.“These vulnerable children of sexual exploitation are victims of horrible abuse, often from a young age. I am proud to sign this law that will protect these children and help them to get the care they need to start their recovery, rather than treat them like criminals, which can further traumatize a child.” said Governor WolfThe legislation had strong bipartisan support and was supported by the Pennsylvania State Police, state Office of the Victim Advocate, Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association, Juvenile Court Judges Commission, Network of Victim’s Assistance of Bucks County, Field Center for Children’s Policy, Practice and Research at the University of Pennsylvania, American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, National Sexual Violence Resource Center and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.Abusers often use violence, threats, and drugs to control young victims of human trafficking, who can be charged with prostitution and drug offenses, among other crimes.“I applaud Governor Wolf and the legislature for standing up for minor victims of human trafficking,” said Jennifer Storm, Commonwealth Victim Advocate. “This new law extends compassion and resources to minor victims of human trafficking caught up in horrifically exploitive situations. It goes a long way toward stopping a cycle of violence and abuse to make room for hope and healing.”Sponsored by Senator Stewart Greenleaf, Senate Bill 554, known as Safe Harbor, creates new safeguards for children of human trafficking, including:Creating immunity for victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation for certain crimes;Directing the Department of Human Services to coordinate specialized services for sexually exploited children, in conjunction with county agencies;Requiring training for law enforcement on how to identify and help victims;Establishing the Safe Harbor for Sexually Exploited Children Fund to support care for victims and to prevent human trafficking.According to the bill sponsor, more than 100,000 children are exploited through prostitution in the United States each year, and since 2016, there were more than 273 human trafficking cases in Pennsylvania.Act 130 of 2018 takes effect in 60 days.center_img SHARE Email Facebook Twitterlast_img read more
