departed for the clearance racks and the deal-a-day websites The problem with a lot of these products They’re technology for the sake of gadgetry meaning they do something kind of cool but thats about it For smart home devices to be truly innovative they must solve a problem facing consumers One of those problems ripe for solving: Utility bills Here are four ways smart home devices can give you a better handle on how your home uses energy and water saving not only money but also precious resources Water cool your air conditioner For years businesses with massive air conditioning systems have literally been sweating their cooling efforts by that I mean theyve been blasting a veil of cool water around their HVAC units to cool the air before it gets sucked into their ventilation systems Now with Mistbox households can keep it cool like that too Mistbox Mistbox The $449 solar-powered misting system automatically detects the proper conditions and when the time is right prompts its four spray bars (one for each side of your condenser unit) into action Average users have reported saving 30% on their air conditioning costs each month As if thats not enough the device is also eligible The mind-reading Neurio sensor helps remedy this long-standing discrepancy by connecting your homes electrical system to a smartphone app that tells you exactly what appliances and devices are slurping down the most energy A Wi-Fi-connected sensor installed within the breaker panel (with detailed instructions though you might want an electrician for this one) the $249 home monitor claims it can reduce energy usage by up to 40% through its real-time monitoring features It will also detect appliances over 400 watts like washers and dryers cataloging when they were last used and how much power they consumed Neurio Sensor Neurio Water your lawn wisely As the entire West Coast is realizing this summer water isnt as plentiful as it used to be Not only that but its getting pretty darned separating immigrant children from their parents on its southern border was "unacceptable" even as he resisted pressure to suspend a bilateral agreement designating the United States a "safe" country for refugees Trudeau has been under increasing pressure to suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement a 2004-era pact under which asylum seekers presenting at a land border crossing in either country are turned back and told to apply for refugee status in the first country they arrived in The agreement has been under fire for years in Canada from lawyers and advocates who argue the United States is not "safe" for refugees and that its system is not analogous to Canada’s "What is happening in the United States is unacceptable I cannot imagine what these families are going through Obviously this is not the way we do things in Canada" Trudeau told reporters at the parliament buildings on Wednesday The comments were by far the harshest by a member of the Canadian government which is trying to prevent a trade war with the United States and is also struggling to control cross-border migration of its own More than 30000 asylum seekers have illegally crossed the Canada-US border since January 2017 many saying they were fleeing US President Donald Trump’s immigration policies Trudeau has come under increasing political pressure to condemn Washington for the practice of splitting up families and putting children in enclosed detention centres As recently as Monday he said he would not play politics with the issue This week former federal Liberals as well as opposition politicians and rights groups called on the federal government to suspend the agreement "The United States is no longer ‘safe’ for asylum seekers We should make crystal clear that we will not be complicit in his mistreatment of refugees" former diplomats Lloyd Axworthy and Allan Rock wrote in an op-ed in the Globe and Mail this week The Trump administration is facing intense criticism in the United States and abroad over its "zero tolerance" policy which can result in immigrant children being separated from their parents after they cross the US border illegally Trump said on Wednesday signed an executive order that he said will keep families together but retain the "zero tolerance" policy A court challenge launched last year argues the Safe Third Country Agreement is discriminatory and violates Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms Recent developments including child separations and US Attorney-General Jeff Sessions’ decision to disregard domestic violence as grounds for a refugee claim only reinforce existing arguments against the agreement said Janet Dench head of the Canadian Council for Refugees which is intervening in the case (Reporting by David Ljunggren in Ottawa and Anna asked the US government to clarify remarks by President Donald Trump’s new ambassador to Berlin after he told a right-wing website he wanted to empower "other conservatives" in Europe The comments by Richard Grenell a former US spokesman at the United Nations and an outspoken defender of Trump drew criticism from politicians across the German political spectrum warning him not to meddle in domestic politics "We have asked the US side for clarification and whether (the remarks) were made as reported" a foreign ministry spokesman said The issue would be looked at again on Wednesday when Grenell is due to make his first official call at the ministry the spokesman said Barely two months in office the political appointee caused anger in his very first week with a tweet telling German companies to withdraw from Iran after the US withdrew from a non-proliferation deal with Iran In a further breach of protocol Grenell also invited Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz a critic of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s refugee policies to an embassy lunch during his forthcoming visit to Berlin Spiegel magazine reported on Monday In an interview with Breitbart News at the weekend Grenell attributed the groundswell of conservatives across Europe to the "failed policies of the left" adding: "I absolutely want to empower other conservatives throughout Europe other leaders" In the same interview he described himself as a big fan of Kurz the head of the conservative People’s Party and who shares power with the far-right Freedom Party in Vienna An embassy spokesman said Kurz had requested the meeting An Austrian governemnt spokesman said Grenell was one of a number of people whom Kurz would meet during his Berlin trip The statement did not say who had initiated the meeting Merkel declined to comment on Kurz’s planned visit to the US embassy during his June 12 visit to Berlin "Like many others I have taken note of this" she said in a cool remark at a news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Netanyahu said that he had also had a brief meeting with Grenell during his Berlin visit "I was asked by the American ambassador to meet him at the airport" he said "I wouldn’t draw any great meaning into that" Rolf Muetzenich deputy leader of the Social Democrats in parliament said Grenell’s remarks should be raised quickly with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "Clearly the US ambassador sees himself as an extension of a right-wing conservative world movement" he told Reuters Muetzenich added that Grenell’s actions violated the 1961 Vienna Convention under which diplomats do not interfere in the domestic affairs of a country Grenell like Trump an avid Twitter user defended himself "I stand by my comments that we are experiencing an awakening from the silent majority – those who reject the elites & their bubble Led by Trump" Not all German politicians have been hostile Jens Spahn perhaps the most prominent critic of Merkel within her Christian ago a high school friend of mine shared with me her sage advice for choosing sexual partners: Never sleep with a man who can fit into your jeans My friend may not have been particularly discriminating in terms of whom she slept with but she appears to have been well ahead of her time by indicating that what really matters is her partners relative not absolute size Much has been said about Clemson University student Mackenzie Pearsons seemingly innocuous article in which she claims to identify a whole new relationship trend in which young women are into a certain type of manthose with a "Dad Bod"because those guys wont make them look bad when they have their picture taken on the beach I am going to be perfectly frank: While there is absolutely nothing wrong with the body type of a 45-year-old man if I could be 19 again I would not be "going nuts over this body type" on a 22-year-old But from an economic perspective maybe it’s smart for Pearson to look for a man who will never beat her in a who-has-the-better-body contest Evidence collected by British psychologists in 2011 suggests this is exactly how women behave when they anticipate being married to a high-income man Historically physical fitness was a strong indicator of how much potential a man had at generating income Back when men earned their livelihood wielding a spear a plough or a fishing net strong men came out on top of the distribution Because of this women who wanted the most for themselves and for their children sensibly passed on men who appeared better-suited to sitting next to the campfire all day with a rack of ribs in one hand and a mug of beer in the other Of course today earning ability is no longer strictly tied to physical strength and partially because of this women are also capable of supporting their families Women may want a man with a good income and a beautiful body but if they are thinking about their long-term happiness they might choose a man with a good income and a less than perfect body To test this researchers at the University of Central Lancashire created online dating profiles for 20 fictional men who varied in terms of physical attractiveness (rated independently on a scale of 1 to 10) and who were assigned an occupational class: high status (doctor architect) medium status (teacher social workers) and low status (postman call-center operator) The dating profiles then were shown to women who were then asked which of the men they would prefer for a long-term relationship The results from this study suggest that women prefer a man who has a medium income over a man who has a high income if he is physically attractive (more than a 7 out of 10) If he is less attractive though (between a 4 and a 6) women prefer a man who has a high income over one who has a medium income The strongest results are among women who are less trusting and those who rate themselves as less likely to be successful on the marriage market If college-educated women anticipate having a husband who has a high occupational status then according to this research they would prefer him to be less physically attractive The general conclusion made by the authors of the study is that a woman who is afraid that her mate will not be faithful will avoid men whom she believes will attract other women This could be because she thinks they will cheat but it could also be that mate-guarding is exhausting and she would rather not incur the cost of being in a relationship with a man who is constantly being pursued by other women There is one other possibility however and that has to do with the distribution of household bargaining power A women who is in a relationship with a man who has outside options in terms of other women because he has a high income and is physically attractive is unlikely to have much influence in decision making in her own family If she cares about economic resources physical attractiveness AND her own bargaining power then it is completely rational to choose a man who is weaker in either one of those characteristics: attractiveness or income When I told my 22-year-old daughter (who by the way thinks this "new trend" is a complete myth) that I was writing this article she said "Oh my God cant everyone just give that poor girl a break" And of course she’s right It is interesting however to think about how these young college-educated women see their lives spread in front of them married to their doughboy husbands Perhaps they are not just looking for a better cuddler maybe they are looking for someone they believe will do his share of the housework And for that I can hardly blame them Write to Marina Adshade at [email protected] IDEAS TIME Ideas hosts the world’s leading voices providing commentary on events in if the White Walkers succeed in conquering Westeros “Heres what logic would tell you: The priority here is going to be disposing if it can be done of this Night King and his one hundred thousand 56-year-old actor also referenced a major clue that George RR Martin dropped about the end of Thrones in a 2015 interview with the Observer to support this line of thinking “I go back to the clue that George R R Martin gave where he said ‘the end of this is gonna be bittersweet’ What the hell that means is anybodys guess At the moment the Daenerys-Jon predicament is not gonna be the priority Theyre on their way to Winterfell in a boat and the priority is to dispose of this common enemy After that if and when that happens then theyre gonna have to deal with their ‘personal issues’ And well have to see where that goes but it gives a fantastic opportunity for wonderful drama and thats all we can hope for” Cunningham is as reliable a source as any to weigh in on the future of Thrones as Martin
